This Laboratory Safety Manual has been provided by the University Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S)
Office to establish basic procedures and to promote safety practices in ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ’s laboratories. This manual is not
intended to cover every procedure and only touches on certain generic subjects   

As part of your introduction to the laboratory, before starting experiments in any lab, become familiar with the procedures, chemicals, and safety equipment in each area that you will be using.

This Biological Safety Manual presents general information and biosafety practices as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).      

This Biological Safety Manual is supplemental to the University’s Laboratory Safety Manual which addresses safe working practices in the lab and Industrial Hygiene aspects of the laboratory work up to and including medical prophylaxis and monitoring for laboratory worker protection

This document also establishes operating procedures
to assist departments and individuals in addressing the requirements for participation in the Occupational Health Program at ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ. This program is designed to:
1. Prevent and detect disease and illness resulting from exposure to possible health hazards in the research environment;
2. Offer prompt and appropriate treatment for exposures; and
3. Establish baseline health data for future comparison

Occupational Health Medicine Questionnaire

The purpose of the NIH Guidelines is to specify the biosafety practices and containment principles for constructing and handling: (i) recombinant nucleic acid molecules, (ii) synthetic nucleic acid molecules, including those that are chemically or otherwise modified but can base pair with naturally occurring nucleic acid molecules, and (iii) cells, organisms, and viruses containing such molecules.

The purpose of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is to assure that ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ researchers care for and use animals in ways judged to be scientifically, technically, and humanely appropriate.   

The mission of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ(³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ) is to ensure that research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA), synthetic nucleotides, infectious agents (pathogens), biological toxins, nanotechnology, or select agents is classified at the appropriate biosafety level and done in accordance with all appropriate guidelines, regulations and good safety practices.
